Everything you need to know about blowouts ⏤ Straight from an expert.

Hi! So excited you decided to stop by V&L today. How ya doin? Hope you’re well and your day includes something you love.

I am sitting here with a tallll glass of ice water with a drop of lemon essential oil in it, and I am here to chat about blowouts. We all love ’em, we all need ’em, and sometimes we can’t afford ’em, which totally sucks. Honestly a picturesque morning for me starts with blowouts at Drybar and iced lattes from Nordstrom followed by wandering through the displays gathering ideas and inspo. Sounds ideal. Blowouts make me feel like a boss babe and I wanted to get all of the details on how to get the perfect blowout at home during those weeks we can’t make it to the salon.

I sat down with hairstylist Emma Weber for a trim and a blowout and asked her allll the juicy details about blowouts and what the perfect recipe for an at-home blowout is, all while sipping a venti iced caramel macchiato ( with soy of course ) and documenting the process with pics.

A little background on Emma: She began her career with hair by working as an assistant at a large hair salon in her hometown. She learned a lot about how salons work and what it takes to be a hairdresser. She then started to pursue her full-time career cutting and styling hair with an apprenticeship through another large salon in Atlanta called Siggers Hairdressers. She has since long completed her apprenticeship and has an ever-growing cliental. She is obsessssed with styling hair and it’s her favorite part of what she gets to do all day.

I’ve been tossing ideas back and forth on how to present this info, interview style, bullet points, audio clip ( LOL kidding ) and I think that the best way would be to lay it all out there question and answer style. Let’s do this.

Madison Crowley: So, how do I prolong this fabulous blowout?
Emma Weber: Easy. Two words: dry shampoo. I use the It’s A 10 Dry Shampoo ( linked here ) and it works magic. Day 3 – or whatever day my blowout starts looking greasy or limp, I spray this dry shampoo on my roots at the top of my head near my part and on my scalp at the back of my head. Here’s a tip that most people don’t know about – to keep your ends away from the frizzy/dry side after a few days of no washing, grab some Biosilk ( linked here ) and put a little bit throughout the ends of your hair. Biosilk is super lightweight and hydrating and will add some glam to your ends. If you have thinner hair, this maaaay not be the best technique to use very often, but definitely does the trick if you are lacking shine. For thick hair, using a lot of product during the blowout helps it live longer. So leave-in conditioner, texturizing spray, root booster, all of these things add texture and life to your hair. For thinner hair, it’s best to add root booster before your hair is blow out and call it a day.

Teasing is also key. Grab a regular comb or a teasing comb and tease the shaft ( middle section of your hair ) and add a little life to your strands. You can also tease the roots of your hair near your part and the back of your hair. It’s also totally an option to refresh your blowout by wetting your roots and re-blowing out the roots. Dry shampoo will be key to this process.

M: Are there any actual benefits to getting your hair blown out?
E: Absolutely! If you are trying to revive dead, dry hair and helping it grow, getting your hair blown out can help keep heat off of your hair every single day. That being said, if you are using the right heat protectant, using heat on your hair every day isn’t the worst thing in the world. ( I use Chi Iron Guard, linked here. ) Getting your hair blown out also keeps you from washing it as frequently, which has major benefits for your hair. When you are trying to revive your hair and make it thick and shiny, it isn’t a good idea to wash it all of the time. When you wash your hair everyday ( or even every other day depending on your hair type ), it strips your scalp of the nutrients that it needs to add natural shine to your hair. It also strips your hair of all of the natural oil that comes from your scalp.

On another note, when you have someone else blow out your hair, it definitely lasts longer because they can get angles that you can’t and they normally can get it more smooth than you are able to doing it yourself. I love at-home blowouts but getting them done in the salon has major benefits.

M: Okay all of that being said about salon blowouts, I want every detail on your tips and tricks for the perfect at-home blowout.
E: I got you. Okay so first, you need a round brush, a blowdryer with different attachments, root booster, hair primer ( your face needs primer before you put makeup on – so does your hair ) and heat protectantThe hair primer that I linked ( Bumble and Bumble Hairdressers Invisible Oil ) acts as a heat protectant and a primer. This product from It’s a 10 is also super great for maximizing your blowout.

Step 1: Flip your hair over and slightly dry your roots without the fixture. It gives your hair a little lift. If your hair dries flat to your head, it will stay flat to your head. If your hair dries away from scalp, it will stay there.

☆ Step 2: Get the rest of your hair 85% dry. This will make the rest of the blowout sooooo much easier.

Step 3: Put the straight nozzle back onto your hair dryer and start at the back with the round brush. I’ve linked a YouTube video that I love and that shows the best way to do this herebut make sure to follow the order that Emma suggests ). If it helps you, you can section it off and blow dry it that way!

Step 4: Once you are all finished, your hair should feel light and bouncy! Finish off with a texturizing spray. You can use Ion Texturizing Spray Wax or Oribe Texturizing Spray.

Pro Tip: Always do your blowout before you do your makeup! All of that heat and moving definitely can make you a little bit sweaty and you don’t want to sweat off your perfectly done makeup.
